2009 Conference Announcement

Dear SDS friends,

After an extremely successful 2008 conference in New York City, the SDS Board of Directors and the Executive Office is pleased to announce that the 2009 Society for Disability Studies conference will take place in Tucson, Arizona.

Along with hosting the conference at an excellent location, the El Conquistador Resort, the Board is even more excited to partner with the University of Arizona. The dedicated scholars and the University administration will make the conference environment welcoming to SDS. As in 2008, the conference will take place in June -- from June 17 to June 20 2009.

if you have attended a Society for Disability Studies conference in the past, you know that we aim to make the experience truly exciting and inclusive for all participants. And, if you have never been able to attend before, you will find our Call for Proposals more than enticing.

With our exciting 2009 conference theme, “It’s ‘Our’ Time: Pathways to and From Disability Studies—Past, Present, Future,” we encourage scholars, artists, and activists to be creative and submit proposals by January 15, 2009. this theme, combined with familiar and new presentation formats, will allow everyone to consider disability scholarship in a new light.

As in the past, this conference will require a significant amount of logistical help. If you are in the Arizona area and are willing to help the local planning committee, please write to conference@disstudies.org.

Stay tuned for more information on the conference at the official 2009 conference site. I hope that you will join us in Tucson. The SDS Board, the Executive Office, and the University of Arizona very much look forward to welcoming you.

Sincerely,

Noam

Noam Ostrander, President
